December 7, 2025, This morning several members of the community, along with the daughter and granddaughter of Heather Hamilton, a cyclist killed two months ago after being struck by a UPS Truck on Foss Street, gathered at the crash site to pay their respects and install a “ghost bike” memorial.

A ghost bike (also referred to as a ghostcycle or whiteCycle) is a bicycle roadside memorial, placed where a cyclist has been killed or severely injured, usually by the driver of a motor vehicle. These bicycles are painted entirely white and can often be seen with signs, flowers, or personal mementos from the families of the lost lives. They appear in different cities around the country and the world. Created by the local communities and volunteers in order to honor those that have been lost.

We included video of the daughter (in the comments) sharing her sentiments regarding the incident as well as additional photos that can be chewed here: https://www.facebook.com/share/p/1BsLogjLBP/

Notably present at the ceremony were newly elected Mayor Liam Lafountain and Ward 4 Councilor Dylan Doughty.

The bike has been decorated with blue flowers as blue was Heather’s favorite color. Although a reminder of the tragic loss, it was powerful to see community members come together for awareness and to offer support to the affected family.

As stated in one of our previous stories (https://www.biddefordbuzz.com/post/biddeford-triumph-and-traged), the Bicycle Coalition of Maine has publicly stated that so far in 2025 Maine has seen 209 crashes involving pedestrians resulting in 40 serious injuries and 19 fatalities. Our state has also seen 198 crashes involving bicyclists resulting in 29 serious injuries and 5 fatalities.

Patrick Conlan, the founder of Bike BS who currently serves on both the City of Biddeford’s Sustainability and Conservation Commissions, contacted the family members directly and organized this event.

Thank you for organizing this Patrick!

Please note, at this time, no known charges have been filed on the driver.
