Parkhurst, who has served as Saco’s assistant superintendent since 2021, was selected for her ability to lead meaningful educational improvements, foster strong community partnerships, and inspire those around her. With more than two decades of experience in Maine public education, she has earned the respect of colleagues throughout the state for her knowledge, integrity, and unwavering commitment to students.

“Meg is not afraid to deliver a hard message when it needs to be said, and she communicates the needs of our school department with honesty, clarity, and conviction,” said Superintendent Jeremy Ray. “That kind of courage is what real leadership looks like. Our schools are stronger because of her vision and her work ethic, and I am personally grateful for everything she does for our students, our staff, and our community.”

Under Parkhurst’s leadership, Saco Schools have implemented consistent, research-based mathematics and early literacy curricula across the district, helping to narrow achievement gaps and strengthen student outcomes. She has also championed innovative learning opportunities, including grant-funded outdoor education initiatives and professional development programs that enhance classroom instruction while minimizing costs to local taxpayers.

Beyond the classroom, Parkhurst has played an instrumental role in planning and coordinating the construction of what will become Maine’s largest elementary school, a significant investment in Saco’s educational future. Her ability to navigate complex projects while maintaining transparency, building community trust, and keeping students at the center of decision-making has been a hallmark of her leadership.

“Meg has been nothing short of dedicated to Saco’s students and has been an invaluable addition to the team,” said Saco School Board Chair Sarah Truman. “I have enjoyed working alongside her and appreciate her exceptional skills and enthusiasm for education. I can't think of anyone more deserving of this award.”

Equally significant is Parkhurst’s influence beyond Saco. A trusted resource among educational leaders throughout York County and across Maine, she is frequently sought out for guidance on educational policy, legislative developments, and complex administrative challenges. Her commitment to mentoring new and emerging principals has helped develop confident, capable school leaders whose work benefits students and staff throughout the region.

“Beyond Meg’s work in Saco, she is a caring mentor to countless other administrators across Maine,” said Maine School Superintendents Association Executive Director Eileen King. “We could not be prouder to recognize her for her years of professionalism, guidance, and commitment to Maine students.”

Parkhurst’s dedication to children and families also extends well beyond her professional responsibilities. She is the president and co-founder of Aid for Saco Kids, a nonprofit organization that helps students facing financial hardship access essential resources, including food, clothing, and academic enrichment opportunities. She also serves on the board of the Educational Foundation of the Kennebunks and Arundel, supporting initiatives that expand educational opportunities for local students.  Prior to joining Saco Schools, Parkhurst held several educational leadership positions in southern Maine, including serving as assistant principal and assistant superintendent in Regional School Unit 21, which serves the Kennebunk-area communities.

Despite her many professional accomplishments, Parkhurst credits the people around her for making meaningful progress possible.

“I’m grateful for this recognition, and I share it with my Saco team and with colleagues across the state,” Parkhurst said. “We lift one another up, always with students at the center. No one does this work alone, and in Maine, no one has to.”

The Maine Assistant Superintendent of the Year award recognizes outstanding leadership, communication, and professionalism among educational administrators. Parkhurst’s selection reflects not only her contributions to Saco Schools but also her lasting influence on colleagues, students, and communities throughout Maine.
