According to the Biddeford Fire Department, At approximately 12:30pm today the Biddeford Fire Department was dispatched for a smoke investigation in Clifford Park. A large amount of smoke was observed from an aircraft that was landing at the Biddeford Airport.

Brush 20, with the Ranger 18 UTV unit, Engine 22 and Car 7 responded to investigate the source of the smoke. Ranger 18 was deployed onto the Clifford Park trail system from the Pool Street parking lot. During investigation Car 7 drove along the roads adjacent to Clifford Park and found a large brush fire burning behind #33 Winding Creek Lane.

The assignment was upgraded at approximately 1:00pm to an All-Hands fire which brought Biddeford EMS 10, EMS 14, Car2 and the BFD Call-Company Firefighters, along with a Saco Tanker, Forestry Brush Truck, UTV, and Car 3, and an Ambulance from Goodwins Mills.

It was determined the fire was approximately 3 acres in size and moving quickly through the dry leaves and brush. Additional assistance was requested to the scene at 1:30pm with a second alarm assignment, which brought Forestry Brush Trucks to the scene from Arundel and Kennebunk, an Engine from Kennebunk and the Regional Rehab Truck from the York Village Fire Department.

A total of 34 firefighters operated to contain the fire for nearly 6 hours because of the terrain and how deep it was burning into the ground with the extremely dry conditions. It is anticipated that the Biddeford Fire Department will return the scene tomorrow to continue extinguishing hot spots. There were no firefighter injuries. The fire is under investigation.

The Wells Fire Department provided station coverage with an Engine and the Scarborough Fire Department provided coverage with an Ambulance and Chief Officer.

Extreme caution is urged with any outside fires. Please follow the outside burning guidelines as determined by the State of Maine Forest Service. If the fire danger level is “high” or above the on-line State Burn Permit System will shut-down automatically.
