August 13, 2026, According to the Biddeford Recreation Department, "there has been a confirmed sighting of a great white shark near our local beaches this morning".

After contacting the department directly, we've learned that the great white was spotted in the area of Granite Point and Timber Point and was heading towards Fortunes Rock.

The sighting was confirmed by the Maine Marine Patrol.

This is the second great white sighting in the Biddeford area in the past two weeks, with the first sighting having included a shark attacking a boat.

According to city officials, lifeguards are regularly reporting sightings of porpoises and seals around public beaches. As sharks often roam areas where seals and porpoises congregate for feeding purposes, lifeguards have been on high alert.

Out of an abundance of caution, the Biddeford Recreation Department, will be flying "purple marine life flags" for the remainder of the day today.

Beachgoers are encouraged to:

• Check in with lifeguards about current conditions before entering the water.

• Remain alert and aware of your surroundings.

• Follow all instructions and advisories from lifeguard staff.

Please use caution while enjoying the beaches today.

If you believe you have seen a shark, please report it to the nearest lifeguard and or call local public officials. You also can report it to the Maine Department of Marine Resources at 207-624-6550.
