Who is Knocking at Your Door?

Have you had solicitors knock on your door recently? YOU ARE NOT ALONE. Biddeford Police Department is aware and has provided the following information below:


Residents have recently reached out to the City with concerns about an uptick in door-to-door solicitation in Biddeford this summer. The Biddeford Police Department would like to remind you that if you have any concerns or doubts about the identity of a stranger at your door, it is safest to keep the door closed. If you do choose to open the door, here are some tips for how to identify legitimate home solicitation:

  •  Companies that sell services at your door are required to get a permit from the City Clerk’s office and carry it with them (unless they are a nonprofit organization). An example of this permit is pictured here. If someone knocks on your door to sell you something, you may ask them to show you their solicitation permit.

  • To receive a permit, the applicant must provide a sample of an agreement informing buyers of their right to cancel. This type of agreement is required by Maine law.

  •  If the permit holder engages in disorderly conduct or harassment while conducting business, their permit may be revoked.
