April 24, 2026, Saco Middle School (SMS) Bobcat Players are bringing a beloved fairytale to life this spring with their production of Shrek The Musical JR., on Friday, May 15, 2026, at 7:00 p.m., and Saturday, May 16, 2026, at 2:00 p.m., in Thornton Academy’s Harold P. Garland Auditorium. Featuring a cast and crew of 55 middle school students, along with support from two high school volunteers, this family-friendly show promises to entertain audiences of all ages while delivering a meaningful message about acceptance and belonging.

Based on the Oscar-winning DreamWorks Animation film and hit Broadway musical, Shrek The Musical JR. celebrates the idea that “beauty is in the eye of the ogre.” Audiences will follow Shrek, an unlikely hero, as he embarks on a journey alongside a wisecracking donkey to rescue Princess Fiona and reclaim his swamp from a cast of banished fairytale misfits. Along the way, the story unfolds into a “big bright beautiful world” where friendship, courage, and self-acceptance take center stage. The production is adapted from the book and lyrics by David Lindsay-Abaire, with music by Jeanine Tesori, and is based on the DreamWorks Animation motion picture and the book by William Steig.
Under the direction of Megan Orlandella and Chelsey Hazelwood, the SMS Bobcat Players have embraced the creativity and collaboration that make this production so special. “This show has been an incredible opportunity for our students to step into bold, imaginative roles and truly shine,” said Orlandella. “They have worked so hard to bring these characters to life, and it’s been inspiring to watch their confidence grow as they discover the joy of storytelling and being part of something bigger than themselves.”
With vibrant costumes, imaginative sets, and a large, inclusive cast, Shrek The Musical JR. offers a role for everyone and showcases the talents of Saco Middle School students both on stage and behind the scenes. The 60-minute musical highlights not only the performing arts program at SMS, but also the importance of creativity, teamwork, and student voice.
