FULL STATEMENT FROM BIDDEFORD FIRE DEPARTMENT INCLUDED BELOW
April 23, 2026, Firefighters are currently working to extinguish a structure fire in an apartment building located in the area of 13 Hazel Street.

According to a Firefighter on the scene, the fire has been contained and they are working to fully secure the area.
We can confirm that Scarborough Fire Department is currently assisting by manning the Biddeford Firestation while our department addresses the issue with the support of several neighboring municipalities.

MEDIA STATEMENT FROM Biddeford Fire Department: ALL-HANDS STRUCTURE FIRE:
This afternoon at 1:12pm the Biddeford Regional Communications Center received a 911 call for a dryer fire in the second-floor apartment at 13 Hazel Street. A Desk Box assignment was dispatched; Biddeford Squad 28, Truck 32, Car 7 Shift Commander, Saco Tanker 6, Saco Car 9, Saco Car 4, Arundel Engine 44, Goodwins Mills Ambulance 86, Saco Ambulance 2, Old Orchard Beach Engine 73, Old Orchard Beach Car 2 and Biddeford Car 1, Car 2, and Car 3.

At 1:15pm, Biddeford Car 7, Captain Ouellette, arrived on scene to find smoke coming from the windows on the second and third floor. An All-Hands Fire assignment was requested, which recalled the off-duty Biddeford Firefighters who responded with Special Hazards 34, and brought additional mutual aid to the scene, Saco Ladder 1, Kennebunk Tower Ladder 1, Goodwins Mills Tanker 84, and City for Station coverage, Scarborough Ladder, Scarborough Ambulance, and Sanford Engine 1.
The fire was contained in the second-floor apartment, but the other three apartment units suffered smoke and water damage. The entire building is not able to be occupied, and the Red Cross is working with the building owner and tenants to find temporary housing.

The fire is under investigation and appears accidental. There were no civilian or firefighter injuries. The last fire units cleared the scene at 2:45pm.
Just prior to this structure fire at 12:55pm, EMS 14 and Medic 16 were dispatched for medical emergency, which left six on-duty Biddeford members to respond with Squad 28, Truck 32 and Car 7.
