đ°SACO | COUNCILOR RESIGNS | Ward 3 City Councilor Joseph Gunn Resigns

âWhile I'm being forced by circumstances to leave office before my time was completed, I can say without hesitation that I am proud of what weâve collectively accomplishedâŠâ
October 7, 2025 - Saco loses a great City Councilor.
Last night, with tears in his eyes, Ward 3 City Councilor Joseph Gunn spoke before Saco City Council and resigned. Gunn has served on the Saco City Council for 6 years and was first elected in 2019. Joe was born in Portland, and grew up attending South Portland and Saco schools. He is a graduate of Thornton Academy, class of 1999, and attended the University of Maine at Orono, class of 2003.
Gunn didnât cite an exact reason for his resignation, rather he stated that he was âbeing forced by circumstances to leave office before my time was completedâ.
Full video can be viewed here:
As a councilor, Joeâs biggest focus has been reforming the structure of local government to make it more responsive to the needs of all of Sacoâs residents. He has always expressed a desire for more residents to run for office or volunteer. Gunn is a firm believer that more voices involved in the process will âlead to greater trust in government, better economic opportunities for our residents, and a more dynamic community that blends local pride with welcoming new voices and perspectivesâ.
After delivering his final remarks Gunn concluded by stating, âIt has been the honor of my life to have been given the trust of the voters of my ward⊠it has been a privilege to serve alongside all of youâ.
Joe finished his speech and both the audience and dais applauded. Councilors then remarked positively about Gunn and his time serving.
Then, it was back to business and the meeting carried on.
Itâs clear this gentleman loved serving his community. Itâs clear Gunn had the respect of the community, his fellow councilors, city staff, etc.
What isnât clear (the question), is why did Joe resign? Maybe it was political? Maybe it was personal? We don't know. What we do know is the City lost a great Councilor.
Thank you for your service Joe!
