“While I'm being forced by circumstances to leave office before my time was completed, I can say without hesitation that I am proud of what we’ve collectively accomplished
”

October 7, 2025 - Saco loses a great City Councilor.

Last night, with tears in his eyes, Ward 3 City Councilor Joseph Gunn spoke before Saco City Council and resigned. Gunn has served on the Saco City Council for 6 years and was first elected in 2019. Joe was born in Portland, and grew up attending South Portland and Saco schools. He is a graduate of Thornton Academy, class of 1999, and attended the University of Maine at Orono, class of 2003.

Gunn didn’t cite an exact reason for his resignation, rather he stated that he was “being forced by circumstances to leave office before my time was completed”.

As a councilor, Joe’s biggest focus has been reforming the structure of local government to make it more responsive to the needs of all of Saco’s residents. He has always expressed a desire for more residents to run for office or volunteer. Gunn is a firm believer that more voices involved in the process will “lead to greater trust in government, better economic opportunities for our residents, and a more dynamic community that blends local pride with welcoming new voices and perspectives”.

After delivering his final remarks Gunn concluded by stating, “It has been the honor of my life to have been given the trust of the voters of my ward
it has been a privilege to serve alongside all of you”.

Joe finished his speech and both the audience and dais applauded. Councilors then remarked positively about Gunn and his time serving.

Then, it was back to business and the meeting carried on.

It’s clear this gentleman loved serving his community. It’s clear Gunn had the respect of the community, his fellow councilors, city staff, etc.

What isn’t clear (the question), is why did Joe resign? Maybe it was political? Maybe it was personal? We don't know. What we do know is the City lost a great Councilor.

Thank you for your service Joe!
