April 7, 2026, Speaker of the House Ryan D. Fecteau (D-Biddeford) issued the following statement following the Supreme Court ruling against a Colorado law banning ‘conversion therapy’ for LGBTQ+ minors that took place on April 4:
“Today’s [April 4, 2026] ruling from the Court is dangerous. It legitimizes an overwhelmingly discredited practice that causes harm to young people. Here in Maine, we will continue to stand by LGBTQ+ youth and their families. Maine’s law still has ways to hold these quacks accountable for harming children. So-called ‘conversion therapy’ has been disavowed by major mental health organizations and for a reason – it is wrong.
Despite this ruling from the nation’s highest court, I want young people to know they are not alone. I see, support, and celebrate you for exactly who you are. You do not need to be changed.”
