Statement from Mayor Liam LaFountain, 10:44 p.m., July 15, 2026
(Biddeford, Maine) The loss of Johan Sebastián Durán Guerrero continues to weigh heavily on his family, friends, and the Biddeford community. As the investigation moves forward, I remain focused on supporting the family, protecting public safety, ensuring that residents have access to the resources they need, and advocating for a transparent and independent investigation.

-I spoke with the Guerrero family’s legal representative. At the family’s request, I will keep the specific details of that conversation private to protect their safety and confidentiality. I remain committed to ensuring that the family’s needs and concerns are heard and centered as events unfold.
-I spoke with Representative Pingree this morning before her meeting with Department of Homeland Security Secretary Mullin. I again emphasized that Maine law enforcement must be fully involved in the investigation and that the process must be as transparent as possible. I pointedly raised my objection to the unacceptable lack of body-worn cameras and the need for clear information regarding the training, supervision, and accountability of the federal agents involved.
-Senator Collins and King have formally requested that the U.S. Department of Justice and the FBI cooperate fully with state and local law enforcement in the investigation of the death of Johan Sebastián Durán Guerrero. They emphasized the need for clear answers and a thorough, fair, and impartial process that gives the public confidence in the findings. I concur.
-Governor Mills visited Biddeford today, and our discussion centered on advocating for the impacted family and addressing the needs of community members affected by this tragedy. I appreciate the Governor's continued support for Biddeford and her commitment to ensuring that Maine law enforcement has a meaningful role in the investigation.
-I invited a representative of the Guerrero family to participate in the meeting with the Governor, and she briefed the Governor and me on the difficulties and challenges that the family is facing. It was sobering.
-The City continues to provide mental health support through its partnership with Sweetser. Residents have been using these services and have shared that they are helpful as they process the grief, fear, and emotional impact of what occurred. Support remains available to the Guerrero family, friends, neighbors, witnesses, and anyone else in the community who has been affected.
-It is likely that more community gatherings will take place. As you exercise your First Amendment right, please be vigilant, be safe, and respect local law enforcement.
We're being reminded in these times that neighbors need to depend on neighbors, and as Biddeford residents, let's keep looking out for each other.
This remains an extraordinarily difficult time for Biddeford. I will continue to support the family, advocate for a complete, thorough and independent investigation, and share verified information as it becomes available.
