April 10, 2026, this coming Monday (April 13th), Gorham Sand & Gravel will begin construction on the Alfred Street Sewer Separation Project to combine sewer lines on Alfred Street (between Summer Street and Porter Street), as well as Mt. Vernon Street, Birch Street, and Porter Street.
The project is expected to run from approximately April 13, 2026 to October, 23, 2026, and will take place in 6 phases, each phase lasting approximately 1 month.
For your convenience, the Biddeford Buzz designed the following infographic for residents to reference both the project timeline and traffic conditions (flaggers, parking, etc.).

As a reminder, this project is being completed as part of the City of Biddeford’s ongoing sewer separation efforts as required by the Maine Department of Environmental Protection.
The previous single-pipe sewer system will be replaced with separate pipes for sewer and stormwater flows. Once the replacement is complete, stormwater runoff will be discharged directly into receiving waterbodies, while wastewater will be treated before discharge, improving water quality.
Phase 1: Porter Street
Phase 2: Alfred Street between Summer Street to Mt. Vernon Street
Alfred Street is anticipated to be open to two-lane traffic during this phase.
Phase 3: Alfred Street between Mt. Vernon Street and Birch Street
Temporary traffic signals are anticipated to be used for guiding traffic during this phase.
Phase 4: Alfred Street between Birch Street and Porter Street
During this phase, flaggers will be on site to guide alternating traffic.
Phase 5: Mt Vernon Street
Phase 6: Birch Street
During construction on Alfred Street, adjacent side streets will be limited to one-way traffic from Alfred Street to minimize vehicles entering the work zone. Mt. Vernon Street, Birch Street, and Porter Street will be open to one-way local traffic only while these streets are under construction.
Throughout the project, on-street parking will be prohibited on Porter Street and Fall Street to allow emergency vehicle access. In addition, parking on Alfred Street will be prohibited between Summer Street and Porter Street beginning on May 11 through completion of the project. On-street parking prohibitions will be in place on Birch Street and Mt. Vernon Street during their respective construction phases.
Sidewalk closures will be required during construction for pedestrian safety. Whenever possible, the contractor will keep sidewalks on one side of the street open.
As work progresses, the information above is subject to change. Important updates to traffic plans will be communicated on the City of Biddeford website, www.biddefordmaine.org/alfredstreetproject.
NOTE: The Biddeford Buzz would like to thank city staff for their assistance in reviewing the infographic for accuracy, design, branding, etc. - We appreciate the teamwork!
