A message from the City of Biddeford Public Works Department:
"Last month, we shared that five of the ash trees on Main Street were removed and set to be replaced. The removed trees were affected by the emerald ash borer, a non-native invasive beetle that attacks ash trees by tunneling through the conductive tissue and cutting off the flow of water and nutrients. Unfortunately, these trees were unable to be rehabilitated and were a safety risk to pedestrians due to their broken, dying branches.

We are pleased to share that the replacement trees were planted this week. The new trees are Princeton American Elm trees, which are resistant to Dutch elm disease.
Thank you to Top Branch  and Pierson Nurseries for assistance with this project. We hope the new trees will thrive in our downtown for years to come!"
