May 14, 2026, Behind every successful nursing student at the University of New England is someone guiding them along the way, someone like Sarah Hutchins. A Senior Professional Academic and Career Advisor and UNE graduate, Hutchins works closely with nursing students as they navigate one of the most demanding academic paths.

Hutchins' journey from student to advisor gives her a unique perspective when supporting her students. With a Bachelor of Arts degree and a Mental Health Rehabilitation Technician/Community certification, she understands the academic and personal challenges students face.

"I had not had a strong relationship with the nursing department, but was really excited to work with the students as I seemed to have a lot in common with them... I have made incredible connections and relationships with students that will hopefully last well beyond their time here at UNE!" said Hutchins.

Students say Hutchins' impact goes far beyond advising. "Feeling connected is something that we all at some point have been looking for here at UNE. Sarah, in my short two years, has shaped my nursing experience far beyond expectations when it comes to creating connections and preparing me for my future," said Jordan Peterson, Nursing, Class of 2028.

Nursing students face intense workloads and high expectations throughout their years at UNE, Hutchins helps them manage these pressures by offering guidance, structure, and most importantly, encouragement during the most difficult moments of the semester.

"Sarah is a thoughtful, student-centered advisor who balances empathy with accountability, helping students navigate challenges while keeping them focused on their goals... Sharing her unique path to illustrate that everyone finds their way in different fashions," said Jeff Conant, a colleague of Hutchins who works in the Academic and Career Advising Office.

For Hutchins, the most rewarding part of her role is watching students grow and succeed. Whether overcoming obstacles or reaching milestones, these moments reinforce her passion for advising.

Throughout the week, students seek her out for guidance or simply someone to talk to, and she makes it clear she is always available to support them. The things that make it worthwhile are the conversations I have about nothing - When students come by to tell me something about their day, their break, their family, their classes, and when students think of me as someone they trust." said Hutchins.

Through her work, Hutchins continues to play a quiet but essential role in shaping the next generation of nurses.

"I have never had someone so invested in my education, nor as enthusiastic about my future. Sarah's encouragement and constant verbalized belief in me has helped me to further believe in myself, and pushed me to work harder as a student and develop a greater passion for nursing,'' said Estelle Cox, Nursing, Class of 2028.

Her experience as a former student at UNE allows her to connect with students on a deeper level - She remembers the long nights of studying, the pressure of university-level classes, and the uncertainty that can come with choosing a career in healthcare. Because of this, she approaches advising with empathy and honesty, helping students feel understood as well as prepared.

Hutchins also emphasizes the importance of balance, reminding students that success is not only about grades but also about maintaining their well-being. She encourages them to take breaks, seek support when needed, and celebrate their progress, even in small ways. "C's get degrees' is something I often remind my students of... While it isn't what you always aim for, it is okay to accept a C once in a while!.. Another one would be that one failure is fixable!... There is always at least one second chance!"

Her dedication extends beyond scheduled appointments as she often checks in with students who may be struggling or feeling overwhelmed. "I want them to feel heard, I often share my own struggles in my academic journey... I want them to know that they are not alone, but are understood," she said. This consistent support helps build trust and fosters a sense of community among nursing students.

"Sarah works to ensure that her office is a place where all of her advisees feel welcome to drop in at any time. There have been numerous times I have walked into her office simply in need of a pep talk or real-life advice, and every time Sarah has welcomed me with open arms and been the strong support I needed," said Cox.

As nursing education grows more demanding, advisors like Hutchins play a crucial role in student success. Her guidance helps students not only reach graduation but also enter the workforce with confidence and compassion. "'I want my students to know that they have someone in their corner for life and that they can do hard things no matter their challenges," Hutchins reflects. "At the end of the day, I want to help students see they are worth it and CAN do it"
