The City Council accepted Councilor Doughty's resignation at its Tuesday, August 4 meeting. Under the Biddeford City Charter, the Mayor will nominate a qualified Ward 4 resident to fill the vacancy within the next 30 days.

Applicants must meet the qualifications established by the Biddeford City Charter and have been a registered voter in Ward 4 for at least the past six months. The City Clerk will verify each applicant's eligibility.
Applications are due by Friday, August 14 at 5:00 PM. Following the application deadline, the Mayor will review submissions and interview selected candidates before making a nomination.
"I know there are many people in Ward 4 who care deeply about our city and have something to contribute," said Mayor LaFountain. "City Council service comes with difficult decisions and a meaningful commitment of time, but it is also an opportunity to improve the quality of life for your neighbors and help shape Biddeford's future. I encourage anyone who is ready to serve with an open mind and a willingness to listen to apply."
The Mayor expects to present a nomination to the City Council at its Tuesday, September 1, 2026, meeting, consistent with the Biddeford City Charter's requirement that the vacancy be filled within 30 days.
