January 16, 2026, Below is the statement we just received from Biddeford Mayor Liam LaFountain regarding reports of potential Federal Immigration Enforcement:

"In recent days, reports of possible federal immigration enforcement activity in Maine have raised understandable anxiety, questions, and fear for some residents, families, and businesses in Biddeford. We recognize that uncertainty of this nature can be deeply unsettling, particularly when information is incomplete or evolving.

At this time, the City of Biddeford has not received confirmation that any federal immigration enforcement activity is planned within the city. While there has been public speculation and media reporting about potential actions in other municipalities, the federal government has not shared any formal notice or operational details with City officials.

Given the seriousness of these reports, the City has sought clarity through appropriate external channels. We have reached out to members of Maine’s federal delegation, including the offices of Senator Collins, Senator King, and Representative Pingree, as well as the Governor’s Office, to inquire about what is known and to request any verified information that may be available to state and federal partners. Those conversations are ongoing.

Since learning of these reports, public safety has remained the City’s top priority. The Police Department and other public safety departments have been working closely with the City Manager’s Office, the Superintendent of Schools and School Department, and communications staff to ensure accurate information is being shared, emergency response protocols are clear, and City services remain available and uninterrupted.

The Biddeford Police Department remains focused on local public safety. As a matter of long-standing policy, the Biddeford Police Department does not enforce federal immigration law and does not participate in civil immigration enforcement. The Department is also in regular contact with the Maine State Police to maintain situational awareness and coordination related to public safety matters.

In the coming days and weeks, dedicated City and School Department staff will continue to monitor developments closely, remain connected across departments, and respond as new, verified information becomes available. This effort will be approached with diligence, care, and respect for the law.

We know that anxiety remains, particularly for families with children and for people worried about what the future may hold. In times like these, access to accurate information is essential. Residents and businesses are encouraged to understand their rights and to prepare calmly and thoughtfully should they encounter federal authorities. Credible guidance is available through the ACLU of Maine at: https://www.aclumaine.org/preparingforice/

Biddeford has been shaped over time by immigrants and others who came here seeking work, safety, and the opportunity to build a life. The city has endured periods of uncertainty before by looking out for one another, grounding itself in shared responsibility, and upholding constitutional protections and the rule of law.

The City remains committed to public safety and the fair and lawful treatment of all who live and work in Biddeford. Updates will be shared as appropriate as verified information becomes available."
